Editor's Corner
This is the annual JAM Jazz Education issue, where
we focus on jazz education in all of its forms. This
year we feature the magnificent Marr Sound Archives
at UMKC, what may be the largest collection of sound
recordings in the world. Their collection goes way
beyond recorded sound, too. It’s a must-visit for any
serious jazz fan, and right in our back yard. We also
have articles on UMKC Professor Bobby Watson from
Connie Humiston (Connie’s first written contribution
to JAM), a “catch up” with Paul Hofmann (now teaching
–and playing - in Rochester), and have profiles of
four fine drummers (three of whom have strong UMKC
Conservatory connections). Education Notes has
highlights from a number of institutions, including the
summer jazz camp for school-aged children directed by
Jayne McShann at the Mutual Musicians Foundation.
And Stanton Kessler pays tribute to dedicated educators
everywhere.
This is also the time of year when we thank the
JAM staff and contributors for another great year. There
have been times when schedules have made things a
little tight for us all this year, and your dedication and
patience are really appreciated. The work you do is important.
And, of course, thanks to all of the advertisers
who help keep us in print. And thank you, musicians
for your music and friendship, and presenters of music
for keeping live jazz in Kansas City.
And Ed Fenner, our beloved KC Jazz Voice, we
miss you every day.
Happy New Year to all
