Kansas City Jazz Master, Alaadeen Receives Award From The Missouri Folk Arts Program
Since 1984, the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program (TAAP) has worked with our state's finest master traditional artists to keep Missouri 's diverse artistic and cultural heritage alive and well. Administered by the Missouri Folk Arts Program (MFAP), the TAAP encourages master traditional artists to pass on their skills and knowledge to promising apprentices from within their communities. Annually, master and apprentice teams apply to the program. An advisory panel of folk arts specialists recommends awards for exemplary apprenticeship teams throughout the state.

This year Kansas City jazz saxophonist Ahmad Alaadeen and his apprentice, Ryan Stephens were selected to participate in TAAP, one of only nine apprenticeships awarded in the entire state. Stephens is a junior at Raytown South High School and started learning tenor saxophone at the age of 10 years old. He fell in love with jazz when he heard his school jazz band play for the first time. He decided that day he was “going to get into that band” and has been playing jazz ever since.

The Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program is funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Missouri Arts Council (MAC). Missouri 's Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program (TAPP) is a dministered by the Missouri Folk Arts Program at the Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Missouri-Columbia

KSU Jazz Gets By With A Little Help from KC Friends

The KSU Jazz Program is about to embark on one of the biggest tours in the history of the music department. Under the direction of Dr. Wayne Goins , a specially selected group of students within the jazz program have been chosen to form the KSU Jazz Ambassadors, a seven-piece student combo that will tour South America for three weeks during the summer of 2007. The combo features Dr. Goins and Richard Smith on guitars, graduate teaching assistant Phil Ward on trumpet, brothers Zach and Ike Hamm on saxophones, Grant Buell on piano, Kelly McCarty on bass, Matt Leifer on drums.

The group will visit four countries over three weeks, beginning on July 3 and returning on July 26. The band will make stops in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil , Buenos Aires in Argentina , Asuncion in Paraguay , and Montevideo in Uruguay . The combo also has plans on performing at several of the U.S. Embassies as they travel through these countries, in addition to performing at various universities along the tour.

The members of the combo will take two courses during the early summer in order to prepare for the trip. An overview on the music of Latin America will be taught by Dr. Goins, with a special guest lecturer—none other than KC's Doug Auwarter visiting the Manhattan campus to offer his expertise and insights into Brazilian music and culture. Dr. Bradley Shaw, an Associate Professor and Director of International and Area Studies College of Arts and Sciences at KSU will teach a wide variety of topics, including language, politics, and various other cultural aspects of the societies in South America , as well as serving as tour guide and translator/interpreter for the KSU Jazz Ambassadors.

Another great thrill for the jazz program was the live television taping of the “KSU Jazz All-Stars with Wayne Goins & Friends,” on April 4, broadcast by the Educational Communication Center located in Dole Hall on campus. An invitation-only audience was brought into the specially re-designed “nightclub” atmosphere in the cable television station. The show featured several student combos led by guitar virtuoso Matt Hill and eight-string Novax artist Kelly McCarty, along with jazz faculty members, including trombonist Paul Hunt, clarinetist Tod Kerstetter, pianist Bill Wingfield, and percussionist Kurt Gartner. Guest artists included former KSU graduate student saxophonist Craig Treinen from Topeka , and sensational KC vocalist Ron Guiterrez. The show was later broadcast on the local KST8 cable channel shown throughout the Midwestern region, and was simultaneously broadcast on KSDB FM 91.9 radio.

Finally, there was plenty of jubilation in the air when Dr. Goins' KSU Concert Jazz Ensemble and Dr. Kurt Gartner's Latin Jazz Ensemble both received two superior ‘I' ratings from judges in Greeley , Colorado , after the bands traveled west to participate in the UNC Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 21, 2007 . CJE and LJE performed Saturday morning and afternoon to the delight of enthusiastic festival audiences. There were special awards given for outstanding soloists: alto saxophonist Nick Pool, bassist Kelly McCarty, and freshman tenor saxophone sensation Brent Pinkall all received citations for their excellent performances during the twenty-minute show. The highlight, however, occurred when Dr. Tod Kerstetter joined CJE to perform a rousing jazz clarinet solo on the Gordon Goodwin's showstopper, ‘Thad Said No,' which thrilled spectators and judges alike.
