by Roger Atkinson

Since I started writing for JAM there have been three editors: Mike Metheny, Kathy Feist Vescovi, and Judy Katz. Mike, Kathy, and Judy have developed and maintained a high standard as the main communication voice for jazz in the Kansas City area, a standard that has been recognized by major jazz publications and fans around the world.

We wish our best to Judy, who has decided to step down due to a schedule that was much busier than she anticipated when she relocated to Kansas City last winter. Thankfully, Judy has fine-tuned the production of JAM so that a publishing neophyte such as myself felt comfortable stepping into the Editor's role when asked by the Board in June.

As Judy mentioned in this column last month, the publication of JAM is a labor of love. We at JAM believe that it is a unique and important part of our healthy music scene. And the readers of JAM make it all possible by consistently grabbing JAM out of their mailbox or from one of our regular distribution points, enjoying the content, and seeking the services from our advertisers.

As we go to press, we are halfway through yet another busy summer of jazz in the region. One senses that the summer scene has had a resurgence this year: more festivals, continued outdoor jazz in a variety of locations across the area, plus the regular club scene. We hope you all have enjoyed the summer thus far, and continue to take in what you can. Plus, as soon as summer is over, we start into our always busy Fall, with the wonderful concert series at the Folly Theater, the Gem Theatre, and the Downtown Marriott.

I know many of you from “hanging out”. Please stop over to say “hi” while you are out. And for those who don't know me, next issue's Member Profile will be hijacked to introduce myself. Happy listening!
