Greetings from Kansas City, USA, where every month is Jazz Appreciation Month! Who knew? Apparently, the Smithsonian Institute and several states have designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month for the last few years. Missouri isn't one of them (though Kansas is)... Of course, that may just be because we celebrate jazz more in a weekend than many other states will all of April. If you're looking for a way to celebrate, you could drop by the Plaza III to say farewell to the Club. It will be closing for renovations in Mid-April, but acts will continue to be booked downstairs right up until work starts, and indefinitely in the restaurant upstairs. I'll be sorry to see it go even after living here a short time, but I applaud the fact that they're continuing to showcase great jazz. Have you heard yet that this year is supposed to be the hottest on record, ever? I'm not sure I'm ready for the famous Kansas City summer heat, but I know I'm ready for the jazz festivals! I'm sure you're planning to warm up with the variety of events around town in the next couple of months, so be sure to take a look at News & Notes to see how the scene is heating up in the coming months right along with the weather. By the way, I'd like to extend an invitation to all members to get involved in the KCJA Board of Directors. There are several spots that need filling, and all committees need members. It's also a lot of fun and a great way to meet people, support the arts, and support your community. See the ad on page 28 for details on how to get involved.
