The Jazz Ambassadors will host the annual Ladies Sing the Blues fundraiser on Thursday, February 17, at the Club at Plaza III, 4749 Pennsylvania. Headlining the event are vocalists Angela Hagenbach , Kathleen Holeman, and Geneva Price. The event includes a dinner a 6:30 p.m. with music by Luqman Hamza. The vocalists begin singing at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person and purchased by calling 913-649-7320. All proceeds go toward the Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors. Red Holloway at KC Jazz Workshop The KC Jazz Workshop will host Red Holloway on Monday, March 21, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. James W. “Red” Holloway was born in Helena, AR, on May 31, 1927. At the age of five, he and his mother moved to Chicago, where he graduated from DuSable High School and attended the Conservatory of Music. During the ‘50s, Red played in Chicago with such notables as Billie Holiday, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Lester Young, Aretha Franklin, and many others. The public finally became aware of Red during the ‘60s when he toured with organist “Brother” Jack McDuff. Red recorded several albums with McDuff on Prestige, including the hit single “Rock Candy”. Red moved to Los Angeles and in 1969 became talent manager and a performer at the famed Parisian Room. In The Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Seventies , Leonard Feather wrote “Holloway is capable of generating great excitement with his big sound and hard-driving, mainstream-modern style.” He is now in partnership with trumpeter Clark Terry, with whom he has recorded on both Concord and Delox. Tickets are $25. Call 913-737-3627 for more information . KU Jazz Festival The 28th Annual KU Jazz Festival is scheduled for March 4–5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Daytime events include college/high school/junior high big bands and combos, vocal groups (Saturday only), and clinics and master classes. Both days will close with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday night's concert will feature Ingrid Jensen's Project O and the KU Jazz Combo I at Swarthout Recital Hall, and Saturday will see Peter Erskine , drums with the KU Jazz Ensemble I , and the KU Jazz Festival Adjudicator All-Star Big Band at the Lied Center. PVCC Jazz Fest Moves to Gem Theater Legendary jazz trumpet/flugelhorn soloist, educator, and former JAM editor Mike Metheny will be the guest artist performing and teaching at the Fourth Annual Penn Valley Community College Jazz Festival, Saturday, April 16, at the Gem Theater and the Mutual Musicians Foundation, both at 18th and Vine in Kansas City, MO. Several high school and middle school jazz bands will be on hand for workshops and will play during the all-day event. The first band will begin at 8 a.m., while Metheny and other guest artists will play with the Penn Valley Jazz Ensemble beginning at about 6 p.m. at the Gem. Enjoy Jazz, Fight Cancer Pianist/vocalist Candace Evans and bassist Ricky Anderson will be performing for a benefit concert for the Cancer Action Network of Kansas City on Wednesday, February 16, from 6:30–9:30 at Town Village Leawood, 4400 W. 115th Street. The concert is a benefit to raise funds for the opening of the new Cancer Action Network Johnson County office on February 7. KKFI February Band Auction The 90.1-FM KKFI Band Auction starts February 22 and continues through February 28 (ending date as of press time). Local bands of various genres will donate a performance within an 80-mile radius of Kansas City on a mutually agreed-upon date. UMKC Conservatory Jazz Festival and George Salisbury Memorial Concert The UMKC Conservatory Jazz Festival is scheduled for February 4–5, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Events include a clinic for participating bands and combos by guest artist Nicholas Payton on Saturday, 1–2 p.m. and a jazz concert on Friday, 6 p.m., featuring the UMKC 11 O'Clock Jazz Band, directed by Paul McKee, and the UMKC Jazz Combo 1, directed by Bobby Watson, Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer, producer and educator. The festival will be topped off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening with the annual George Salisbury Memorial Scholarship Concert, featuring the UMKC Concert Jazz Ensemble, directed by Watson with Payton and Joe Chambers, along with the UMKC Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Jim Snell. Chestnut/Gordon at Lawrence Blues/gospel pianist Cyrus Chestnut and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon will perform at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire, in Lawrence, KS, on Thursday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. Two of the most soulful, witty improvisers in jazz meet in an intimate duo setting. Pianist Chestnut's joyful, spiritual music draws upon his early experiences in the church as well as his scholarly studies at Berklee. The New York Times says he has “one of the surest senses of swing in jazz,” while the New York Post calls his musical personality “buoyant and witty.” Trombonist Gordon encapsulates the entire history of jazz trombone in his outgoing style. Twice named trombonist of the year by the Jazz Journalists Association and recently named one of the top trombonists in the country by DownBeat , Gordon has performed extensively with the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the L incoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Mardi Gras Club Crawl Comes Early The 14th Annual Captain Morgan Mardi Gras Blues Crawl has been putting Kansas City on the map for the annual Fat Tuesday celebrations around the world. This year is no different. On Tuesday, February 8, about 15 clubs will be hosting blues and Zydeco bands for busloads of revelers. Highlighting the event is Louisiana's Rosie Ledet & the Zydeco Playboys at the Grand Emporium , 3832 Main, and legendary blues artist Eddie Shaw and the Wolfgang at B.B.'s Barbecue, at 1205 E. 85th St. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Ticket prices for the full night of entertainment are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event. Wayne Henderson & the Jazz Crusaders at Gem The Jammin' at the Gem series continues with Wayne Henderson with the Jazz Crusaders on Saturday, February 12, at the Gem Theater, 18th & Vine. In the ‘50s, trombonist Wayne Henderson, saxophonist Wilton Felder , drummer Stix Hooper , and pianist Joe Sample founded the distinctive bop sound of the Jazz Crusaders. In the ‘60s, they became one of the most successful jazz acts both musically and critically. By the ‘70s, Henderson left the band and they became known as the Crusaders. The group grew into more of a funk band with their biggest commercial hit, “Street Life”, in the ‘80s. In the ‘90s, the group reunited and has been touring since. Tickets are $30. For more information , call 816-474-8463. Recovery Jam at Majestic The Recovery Jazz Jam and Reception will be held Sunday, February 27, from 5–9 p.m. at the Majestic Steakhouse, 931 Broadway. Trumpeter Lonnie McFadden and pianist Mark Lowery will host the event. Sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of Greater Kansas City, the event is in honor of those in recovery. A $50 reservation includes dinner, music, and a silent auction. Herbie Hancock at the Gem Pianist Herbie Hancock will be performing at the Gem Theater, 18th & Vine, on Wednesday, March 2, at 8 p.m. The renowned jazz pianist will perform with saxophonist Michael Brecker and trumpeter Roy Hargrove in a concert called “Directions in Music.” The three originally recorded “Directions in Music” as a tribute to John Coltran e and Miles Davis at Massey Hall in Toronto. Bloom Chases Pollock Soprano saxophonst Jane Ira Bloom and her quartet will perform what should be one of the most inspirational and original music events of the season. The band will perform a tribute to the artist Jackson Pollock on Thursday, March 3, at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire, in Lawrence, KS, at 7:30 p.m. The innovative soprano saxophonist recreates the way Jackson Pollock pushed paint around the canvas by having her quartet move sound around the group in a sonically similar fashion. Using live electronics as well as acoustic instruments, the band takes the kinetic energy and color of Pollock's work to create music that is equal parts physical and meditative. Leonard Feather called Bloom “a commanding and insightful improvisor” while Bob Blumenthal praised her “commitment to beauty and adventure.” Tickets are $30. For more information , call 785-843-ARTS. Pat Metheny at Uptown Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny will perform Saturday, March 12, 8 p.m., at the Uptown Theater , 3700 Broadway. The concert is part of his world tour for his newly released album The Way Up . Joining him are pianist Lyle Mays, bassist Steve Rodby, Mexican drummer Antonio Sanchez, Vietnamese born/Seattle-based trumpeter Cuong Vu, and Brasilian guitarist Nando Lauria. “This promises to be one of the most interesting editions of the PMG yet. This lineup has an enormous range of color and the level of talent and artistic range of this particular band is really exciting,” says KC native Metheny. (See Folly News this issue.) Jazz Reaches Out for Swope Parkway Once again the jazz community will pull together to raise money for Swope Health Services with a benefit concert. On Sunday, March 13, over 25 musicians—blues and jazz—will jam from 4–9 p.m. at Jazz Outreach 2005 in Westport at the Beaumont Club, 4050 Pennsylvania. Musicians include Everette DeVan, Millie Edwards, Gerald Dunn , Julie Turner, Tim Whitmer, Eddie Saunders, Angela Hagenbach , Tommy Ruskin, Dianne “Mama” Ray, Cotton Candy Washington, Duck Warner, and more. Heath Brothers and Barry Harris in Charlie Parker Tribute A Charlie Parker Memorial Concert will be held Saturday, March 26, 8 p.m., at the Gem Theater, 18th & Vine. *The concert will present a star-studded ensemble of jazz musicians including saxophonist Jimmy Heath, once known as “Little Bird”, and his brother, bassist Percy Heath, the sole living survivor of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Kansas City Jazz All-Stars in Jazz Cabaret The Fourth Annual Plaza Rotary Jazz Cabaret – the “Kansas City SwingShow,” will feature Tim Whitmer, Vice Bilardo, and Rusty Tucker, along with the Wild Women. This star-studded line-up will perform an evening of spectacular jazz in the intimate, cabaret-style ambiance of the American Heartland Theater in Crown Center on Sunday, March 6, at 7 p.m. The Swingstar Houseband features Whitmer on piano, Jurgen Welge on drums, James Albright on upright bass, Everette DeVan on organ, Jim Mair on tenor saxophone, Carl Bender on baritone saxophone, Stan Kessler on trumpet, and Duck Warner on trombone. The Wild Women includes vocalists Myra Taylor, Millie Edwards, Geneva Price, and Lori Tucker, accompanied by Bill Maness. “The event allows us to generate support from both jazz lovers and the supporters of our beneficiary charities, The Bridge Home for Children and Turning Point, ” explains Kile Morrison, president of the Plaza Rotary Club.
