Finding John Park I must admit, I really didn't know John Park very well when Chuck Haddix first suggested we do a cover story on the legend. I knew he was Kim Park's dad and a phenomenal saxophone player in the Stan Kenton Band during the 70s. But I really did not know the treasure he was, both musically and spiritually. The article in this issue “The Heart of John Park,” written by Todd Estes, is a very moving and inspirational piece that will truly affect you (it did me for days!). It immediately compels you to listen to him. Thanks to the Park family, John Park's performances can be heard at the Marr Sound Archives at UMKC as well as in an upcoming CD put out by Kim. (The CD combines both Kim's and John's recordings.) A documentary is also being filmed. We have a lot of interviews in this issue. One is a delightful Q&A (yes, it's back) between writer/pianist/vocalist Carol Comer and pianist/vocalist Karrin Allyson. Another is a look at the New Jazz scene including interviews with members of Malachy Papers and Snuff Jazz. Finally, guitarist John Stein tells us of his trek from Kansas City to the Berklee School of Music where he teaches. I am happy to announce the addition of Jan Cartwright to our staff. As a fellow editor and wife of jazz musician Joe Cartwright, her input has been invaluable and a blessing to the magazine. On the flip side, we at JAM will miss writer Bill Fogarty who passed away in September. He wrote articles and reviewed many CDs for this publication and was a board member of the Kansas City Jazz Workshop. His presence will be missed in the jazz community. We will also miss another voice in the community: Jeff Charney's. Charney has been a jazz dj for almost 25 years at KPRT and KPRS. His Sunday Morning Jazz Brunch played its last smooth jazz track on September 12. Charney will continue as production manager at the station. I for one am sad to see the show go. Thanks, Jeff, for all your enthusiastic help over the years. RETURN
