The Archives Receives Collection from Warren Bowman Since its inception in 1987 the Marr Sound Archives has become one of the top jazz collections in the country, surpassing 261,000 sound recordings. Recently the archives benefitted from the generosity of Diane (Mathis) Bowman of Raymore, Missouri, who donated her son Warren Bowman's extensive collection of jazz LPs, CDs and DVD movies. As reported in the October-November 2003 issue of Jazz Ambassador Magazine, long time Kansas City pianist, Warren Bowman, passed away on September 13, 2003. Warren had impeccable taste and a broad musical interest, ranging from traditional to the avant garde. As a pianist, Warren collected with an ear to songs and vocalists. The large collection of recordings by contemporary Kansas City musicians complements the sound archives' extensive holdings of Kansas City jazz. The DVD movie collection is a wonderful addition. He chose movies judiciously, selecting the best from American and foreign cinema. Mrs. Bowman's gift benefits students of jazz and film studies, both areas of emphasis at UMKC. The collection is being cataloged and will be available to students and the community at the Marr Sound Archives and Music/Media Library.
