Dean Hampton Something to Think About While on a recent return trip to Kansas City on I-70, I noticed several billboards advertising museums, functions and points of interest in and around the KC metro area. But not once did I see the word "jazz." My bet is that while some folks come to Kansas City only for the jazz, most do not. They may instead come for a baseball or football game, the Nelson-Atkins, to shop for a weekend, or a host of other reasons. I would also bet that most of those who come for non-jazz reasons have never heard of the American Jazz Museum and will not make an effort to find it. But, if we made them aware of it, they would dive in for a bit of our great music in their free time. This is where the Jazz Ambassadors, the American Jazz Museum, and the club and venue owners need to get on the ball. We must let visitors know we are here and that we want their business and fellowship! First, I would put several billboards on I-29 coming in from KCI. And I would have several more on I-70 both east and west. Next would be I-35 in both directions. If we want traffic at 18th & Vine and other KC jazz venues, we will have to do what it takes to attract it. Final Gillespie Concerts Come join us for a once in a lifetime concert event. Within the next 45 days the Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors will be broadcasting the last two Dizzy Gillespie concerts caught on film before his death in 1993. These performances took place at the Blue Note in New York City and the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. The exact dates are not known at this time. Watch for a banner ad to appear on our web site at www.jazzkc.org for broadcast information. Unless you were actually there, you have never before seen these shows. Each concert was filmed in HDTV insuring the highest quality video and audio on the Internet. The concerts will be available in full motion, full audio and full screen TV quality right on your desktop. We will provide these concerts without freezing, buffering and without downloading. This includes those of you using a low bandwidth connection as well. Just click on and view! Both concerts will include rare backstage footage with Dizzy himself. The cost of the concerts will be between $5.99 and $6.49. They are being presented in cooperation with RealCastLive (http://www.realcastlive.net) and a portion of the proceeds will go to the KC Jazz Ambassadors. A Cool Resource Last October I reported in JAM that the Gavin charts were history and that the Yellow Dog Jazz Reports would be attempting to fill the void. What a success Yellow Dog has been! If fact, it has been so successful that they have changed their name to Jazz Week and have established a new web site at jazzweek.com. Jazz Week charts both jazz and smooth jazz formats. In each category you can see who's ranked where based on the number of spins, and who wins the honors for "Top Adds," "Increased Airplay" and who is "Chartbound." In addition, Jazz Week online covers the latest news in jazz, has feature articles and CD reviews, and much more. While you can view the previous week's charts online, subscribers will receive faxed copies of the charts each Friday. One of the hottest things going on the Jazz Week jazz charts is that three KC-connected artists have been ranking high in the past month: Kevin Mahogany for Pride & Joy, Bobby Watson for Live & Learn, and Karrin Allyson for In Blue. Each have been in the top 5. Oops! In the last JAM I told you about Dr. Peder Horner's online jazz radio station. While I suggested that you find his station online at live365.com I failed to mention the address to connect directly to his station/web site. It will be worth your while to visit him at www.classicjazzcorner.com. Also, Dr. Horner thanks those KC musicians who have already sent him material for online broadcast. If you have not sent him your CDs as of yet, the address is: Peder E. Horner, M.D., c/o Classic Jazz Corner, 4102 Booth St., Kansas City, KS 66103-3104.
