A
Blues Society On the Go
Last summer the Kansas
City Blues Society participated in a lot of different events where
we gained valuable exposure and sold a record amount of merchandise.
I would like to send out a big "thank you" to all of our
volunteers for helping us at these events.
The Kansas City Blues Society holds the annual election of our Board
of Directors on the second Thursday of November. This year that will
be on November 14. Only members of the KCBS are allowed to vote in
this election and you must be a KCBS member to run for a position
on the board. There are various committees that our board members
oversee and we always have room for more people to get involved. Let
me give you an idea of what each committee does.
The Advertising Committee handles the sale of advertisements
for our monthly newsletter, Blues News. This committee also coordinates
the advertising and promotional campaigns of all KCBS events.
The Blues In the Schools Committee is responsible for coordinating
our workshops and live performances that are held at different high
schools around the city. The National Blues Foundation in Memphis
hands down the BITS program outlines to us. This program is an excellent
way to introduce our youth to the world of Blues music.
The Development/Fundraising Committee is always busy looking
for money. We are applying for different grants and soliciting corporate
sponsorships all year around.
Our Events Committee gets involved with the preparation and
production of our events throughout the year. This involves coordinating
the many details that go into each event, whether it is hiring a company
to provide PA sound services or designing a bus route to take people
from one club to another during our Mardi Gras Club Crawl.
The Media/Publicity Committee is responsible for sending press
releases to area newspapers, television and radio stations in an effort
to help promote each event and the Kansas City Blues Society.
The Membership Committee is responsible for keeping track of all
memberships. When a person's membership is due to expire, this committee
sends them a reminder letter. When someone renews his or her membership,
or when a new member joins the KCBS, we send them a welcome letter
along with their new membership card.
The Merchandise Committee orders and keeps track of the inventories
of the merchandise that we sell at different events. They also staff
our booths with volunteers to handle the sale of our many different
items.
Our Newsletter Committee is a very busy one. These people are
responsible for coordinating all of the articles that appear in our
monthly newsletter. This means deciding what articles to run, which
CD reviews to include, organizing the layout of the newsletter and
executing its distribution throughout the city as well as the mailing
to all of our members.
The Volunteer Committee is in charge of signing up and scheduling
volunteers to work at our events. This is a very important committee
since we are a volunteer organization and we need people to help us
out all year long.
I hope this gives you
a little insight into the many elements that are required to keep
an organization like the Kansas City Blues Society running. Let us
know if you would like to become involved in any of these areas. We
can always use more help!
