JAZZ FUTURES Meet two young musicians who are set to carry the jazz torch into the 21st century.
School: Shawnee Mission East Class of: 2001 Recent Achievement: Recipient of the "Ella Fitzgerald Outstanding Vocalist Award" at the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival in May 2001 at New York City's Avery Fisher Hall. Favorite jazz musician(s): "I just started listening to jazz this year, and my favorites are Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. And also Carmen Lundy; she is truly amazing." Why jazz education is important: "I've really enjoyed learning more about a genre that's not so uptight and doesn't have to be done in such a specific manner. Jazz is very free and very open to your imagination; you are able to express yourself in many different ways. Also, when you're in high school you are learning about all kinds of different styles of music. I've found that jazz is a really good way to get through to people and connect with them." Plans for the future: "This fall I will be attending the University of Kansas as a biology major. But I am thinking about a double major in vocal performance."
School: Paseo Academy Class of: 2001 Recent Achievements: All-District Jazz Ensemble 1998-2001; Outstanding Musicianship Awards from Northwest Missouri State University and Central Missouri State University festivals; Down Beat magazine Student of the Year; Recipient of the Dorothy Shepherd Award and a 2001 Urban League Guild Scholarship. Favorite jazz musician(s): "Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson and McCoy Tyner." Why jazz education is important: "I think music education is important. Not just jazz education. Music stimulates one's mind. And you can express a lot of things through it. It really is the international language. You don't need words to express yourself through music. Plans for the future: "I'll be attending Penn Valley Community College this fall, and then, hopefully, after one semester, I'll be going to Philadelphia to attend the University of the Arts."
