THE MAJESTIC STEAK HOUSE
931 Broadway
816-471-8484
Driving along Broadway in the heart of downtown Kansas City, you could get the impression that the building behind the red canopy is just another two-table diner. But look closer, and then take a step inside, and you'll see for yourself why the Majestic is called just that.

The original Majestic was 40 years old when the doors were closed at the 31st and Holmes location in 1977. Then, in 1993, current owner Doug Barnard revived the name and opened the Majestic Steak House now located at 10th and Broadway.

The Majestic Steak House makes its home in the Fitzpatrick building, which was built in 1910 and is listed on the national registry of historical places. Once home to a saloon and bordello, the building's original tin ceiling, tile floors and antique bars create an unforgettable ambiance. The inviting atmosphere, however, is just an introduction to what the Majestic has to offer.

Serving lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., the Majestic is an ideal restaurant in which to dine with business partners, out of town guests, or your closest friends. The upstairs dining room and boardroom provide a perfect way to change the pace for any ordinary business meeting and lunch. And the boardroom, which is next to the fourth floor Cigar Club, seats approximately 14 around the conference table. The boardroom is also equipped with its own modem line.

The third floor private dining room seats up to 40 guests and provides an intimate area to socialize and dine. These separate dining areas may be reserved by contacting the Majestic in advance.

"We've had groups that have reserved the whole restaurant and have brought in as many as 250 people," Barnard said recently. "On those occasions they were able to do something different on every level of the restaurant."

The Cigar Club is a comfortable place to just relax, enjoy a drink and visit. With its own walk-in humidor supplied with many of the finest cigars available, you will certainly enjoy this room's relaxed atmosphere. Lined with leather sofas and coffee tables, you may even get the feeling you are already "home."

Dinner is served at the Majestic seven nights a week beginning at 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. Although reservations are not required, you are encouraged to make them. The main dining room fills up fast.

If it's music you're after, be sure you indicate that when you make your reservations. In fact, it's a good idea to have your "live jazz" reservations confirmed. Also keep in mind that only the main dining room is smoke-free. The Majestic jazz club down below does not offer a non-smoking section.

The jazz you will enjoy at the Majestic represents Kansas City's finest. With no cover charge and music seven nights a week, it's hard not to get spoiled. Singer Julie Turner and drummer Tommy Ruskin begin each week on Sunday evenings from 5:00. until 9:00 p.m. and return on Thursdays from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. And pianists Billy Meynier (Mondays), Joe Cartwright (Tuesdays/Wednesdays) and Bram Wijnands (Fridays/Saturdays) fill out the rest of the week with their respective groups. Seating is limited in the jazz club, so it's good to be considerate; when you are finished with dinner, it's time to move along so the next group can enjoy dinner and jazz as much as you just have.

The Majestic offers Kansas City a comfortable yet exquisite atmosphere for dining and live jazz. And owner Doug Barnard speaks of the total experience with justifiable pride.

"Diners can expect an overall fun experience at the Majestic Steak House. From the time they walk through the door of our historic building, to the top-notch quality of the steaks, the friendly and knowledgeable service of our staff, and the live music, it's going to be a fun evening."
