An Acclaimed Flautist Finds JAM
Hi. This is Bobbi Humphrey. Just came across your site. I really enjoyed it. Please link my site at www.bobbihumphrey.com to your artist list.

I miss Kansas City and look forward to performing there this year.

All the best!

Discovering KC Jazz
May I suggest that you add one more name to the opening paragraph of your KC JAM web site? After "discovering" Karrin Allyson and Kevin Mahogany, I've now stumbled across another fabulous KC voice: Angela Hagenbach. No city should be allowed to have all three in one town. Therefore, please send any one of them to the Detroit area right away.

All the best,
Jim Jeffries

p.s. I just joined your association a few minutes ago.

One More From Detroit
Nice site! I love the rich sound of jazz in Kansas City!

Take a few moments to browse "A Guide to Jazz Trumpet Players" and, if you like, please add a link. A link to your site is already there. The site is located at

Thanks for your time,

A Satisfied Jazz Ambassador
Dean,
I think JAM is terrific, and I think you and the other staffers do an excellent job with it.

I've meant to write for a while in response to your invitation in the December/January issue ("Hampton's Hot Licks," page 15). Frankly, my vote is not to change the format much. I think the frequency of issues is as it should be. And I think the range of topics is good as well.

The feature I most enjoy is the occasional stranded-on-a-desert-island article where the artists pick their favorite discs. I'm always looking for tips on good discs, and those articles are full of them.

Anyway, congratulations on an excellent publication. I enjoy it.

I would like to ask, would you be so kind as to create a link to us on your site? We are O.T.T. Chicago Swing and our URL is

Happy New Year, and thank you very much.

Another Good Link
I love your website! Nicely done.

I manage a jazz facility called the NSU Jazz Lab. We are owned and operated by Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. We have our own website with many pictures and articles on the monthly artists we present. We have presented many of your Kansas City natives such as Bobby Watson, Claude Williams and recently Jay McShann. Would you consider linking our site to yours in your jazz education and area club sections? Also may we add a link to your site from ours?

Thank you for your consideration and keep up the great work.

A Report from Blues Alley
Whilst working in DC recently, I have been to the Blues Alley jazz club on three occasions so far. As a Kansas Citian, I like to compare venues outside Kansas City to the places in KC I like. Blues Alley ranks right up there with the Blue Room for those of us who truly love the music and want to listen. The announcement that precedes performances at Blues Alley requests that patrons respect the performers and other customers by keeping conversations down during the music, turning off cell phones, etc. There, too, is no smoking in the main dining/listening area, although some smoke drifts in from the bar. Blues Alley is a bit pricey -- covers have ranged from $18 to $22.50 -- however, the quality of jazz performers there is exceptional. And the place has character. I got a bit of satisfaction simply by ordering a regular menu item called "Ahmad Jamal Penne Pasta," then listening to an outstanding performance by Ahmad Jamal!

To date I have seen a solo performance by Kenny Rankin, back after over three years of recovery from an injury to his "guitar arm," Ahmad Jamal's quartet, a great musical performance (hate to say this, but he must have a 1,000 MHz Pentium processor driving his right hand), and KC's Karrin Allyson!

As usual, Karrin's superb vocal styling and musical talent was enthusiastically appreciated by the Georgetown crowd with whom she connected in her direct way. Bob Bowman and Danny Embrey were outstanding as well. It was like old home week, with a handful of Karrin/Bob/Danny fans in the audience. A very pleasant evening.

We must appreciate the musical talent we have in Kansas City (some do). When you try to find good jazz, the straight ahead music we are accustomed to hearing at the Blue Room, Fedora, the Phoenix, Jardine's and all the other great venues in KC, it's a bit disconcerting to have to PAY for such talent in another city! But, I feel it was worth the price.
