by Doug Tatum 1998-99 at the Folly: A Sneak Preview The 1997-1998 Folly Jazz Series has come to a close, and I can't help but reflect a bit about the season just ended. For me, probably the moment that was the most pure fun was witnessing the sight of Chick Corea jumping up from the piano and racing over to the marimba with mallets in hand to begin playing next to Gary Burton, at one point even elbowing Burton out of the way. In November, presenting the drummer Roy Haynes was a great thrill -- and what a character he is! Don Byron's "Bug Music" was a hit with the Folly audience in January, and in February, Jay McShann, Claude Williams, Harold Ashby and Harry "Sweets" Edison made some really memorable music together. March was the Joe Henderson Quintet, and Marian McPartland in April. What a truly great lady Marian is. And now, for a "sneak preview" of the 1998-99 Folly Jazz Series. On Friday, October 23, the Folly will present the Count Basie Orchestra under the musical direction of Grover Mitchell. Next, the Charles McPherson Quartet will be featured on Saturday, November 14. McPherson is one of the greatest alto saxophonists of all time and an unapologetic disciple of the Charlie Parker school of bebop. It wasn't an accident that McPherson was chosen to play the lead lines for the soundtrack of Clint Eastwood's film, Bird. On Saturday, February 13, 1999, the Folly will present Ray Drummond's "Excursions" band, featuring some of the hottest young talent around, including pianist Danilo Perez and tenor saxophonist David Sanchez. Drummond is a veteran jazz bassist who has worked with just about everyone. Then, on March 7, The Folly will have the distinct honor of presenting an indisputable jazz icon -- pianist Dave Brubeck and his quartet. As of this writing, we are working to finalize the final offerings of the new season, and an official announcement of the entire series should be made in the near future. To request a copy of a '98-99 flyer be mailed to you as soon as it is available, please call the Folly Theater at (816) 842-5500. Doug Tatum is Executive Director of the Folly Theater.
